Get Alarmed with a FREE Smoke Alarm from the Collierville Fire Department

In 2016 there were 1,342,000 fires in the United States that resulted in 3,390 fire deaths. One hundred thirteen of those fatalities occurred in Tennessee. With their smoke alarm campaign the CFD intends to continue to keep Collierville and her residents safe from fire.

In 2018 the Collierville Fire Department is initiating a campaign to insure that every Collierville citizen has a smoke alarm in their residence. Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast.  Half of home fire deaths happen between 11 PM and 7 AM when most people are asleep.  Working smoke alarms provide a warning so residents can escape. The National Fire Protection Association notes that the risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.  Does your home have a working smoke alarm?

At this time the CFD has 90 free smoke alarms to distribute. Each alarm has a sealed 10 year battery which eliminates the need to change batteries twice each year. The CFD will be canvassing Collierville neighborhoods starting on Monday, January 8th with installations scheduled for Saturday, January 13th (weather permitting).  The CFD will begin their efforts in older neighborhoods that may have missed out on current smoke alarm recommendations. Collierville residents without a smoking alarm will be given one and the fire department will install it. If you or someone you know (Collierville residents only) needs a smoke alarm and cannot afford or install one call the CFD at 901.457.2400 to make an appointment for a FREE alarm installation. Callers will be asked to leave their name, contact information and the best time to be reached.

The CFD asks every family to:

  • Test smoke alarms once a month.

  • Create an escape plan with two routes from every room.

  • Practice your escape plan at least twice a year.

  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
